No Longer Putting in 13-Hour Work Days and Making More than Double the Money
Ayn Toppin Credits ProFit’s Business Accelerator Coaching Program
Written by Emily Beers
Ayn Toppin opened Guide Personal Training in Northampton, Massachusetts in 2021, and by 2023 she realized she needed a little business help.

Toppin was working way too many hours, her schedule was all over the place, and knew that she lacked basic systems and processes “to simplify things,” Toppin explained.

Ideally, she wanted to connect with experts who were familiar with the semi-private, small group training model she was running, people who had maybe already learned from mistakes she was making, who could help show her her blindspots and get her where she wanted to go faster.

Then she stumbled across ProFit’s podcast and quickly took to what ProFit’s gym business mentors Tim Lyons and Randy Angsten had to say.

She “lurked on the podcast for a while,” said Toppin, whose monthly revenue at the time sat at around $16,000 a month.

Toppin admits she was scared to take the plunge.

“I was pretty terrified to put this on my expenses list, but if I was going to do it, I was going to make the most of it. I was going to watch every video in the portal,” she said.

Needless to say, despite her fears, Toppin signed up for the Business Accelerator Coaching Program in August of 2023, and watched every single video in the portal.

To say it paid off is an understatement.
Two Key Takeaways: Small Things Pay off With Big Rewards
1. Work Less
Prior to the Business Accelerator Coaching Program, Toppin was working 13-hour days, coaching both semi-private and one-on-one clients “dispersed” throughout the day.

“It was just very scattered and everyday was a bit different,” said Toppin, who knew she wasn’t using her time efficiently.

The program, and the mentorship she received from Lyons and Angsten, helped her create a more structured, efficient calendar. They also convinced her to stop selling one-on-one personal training, as it’s too time-consuming, and focus entirely on her semi-private small group services.

Since taking the program, Toppin has hired a full-time coach, who coaches all of the morning shifts from 6 a.m. until noon, freeing her up even more to work on the business.

These changes have made all the difference to Toppin, who no longer works such long days, and who is hoping to remove herself from on-floor coaching completely in the near future.
2. Increased Capacity
Toppin’s gym used to accommodate four semi-private clients at once, but Lyons and Angsten convinced her to increase it to five. Though this seems like a small thing, it has had huge benefits.

“It pretty much paid for my ability to hire that coach, being able to service just one more person per hour,” Toppin explained.

Before the coaching program, “I was a solo show and I had a waitlist and I wasn’t taking people on. Adding having that one more station opened up the floodgates,” she added.
Where Toppin is Today
A year-and-a-half since taking the Business Accelerator, Toppin’s revenue has more than doubled, going from $16,000 a month to between $35,000 and $36,000.

From a membership standpoint, Toppin has increased her membership base by more than 30 percent—from 62 to 93 members—as well.

Worth noting: Toppin also owns a CrossFit gym—Pioneer Valley CrossFit—that runs larger group classes. And although ProFit’s Coaching Program is designed for those who run the semi-private model (or are looking to convert to the semi-private model), Toppin said she has taken a lot of the business advice she got from the course and has applied it to her CrossFit gym. As a result, that gym, which had been losing money, is finally now turning a profit.

Today, Toppin is also a member of ProFit’s Iron Circle, an exclusive mastermind group made up of gym owners earning at least $30,000 in revenue a month.

Being part of the group has allowed Toppin to continue to grow, well after she finished the Business Accelerator, she explained.

“It’s a safety net of resources and knowledge and wisdom…Any resource you could possibly need in this industry you can get through this group,” Toppin said.
Toppin’s Message
To gym owners who are in the shoes Toppin was two years ago, she offered this message of hope: I was trapped in my business. I was handcuffed to it in a way that wasn’t sustainable…[But] there is a way out. You can do it,” she said, adding that it requires getting help and investing in your business.

“There’s a way to step out and not have to be on the floor for 12 hours a day. It is possible,” she continued. And if you believe in the semi-private model, “these are the guys to do it with.”

She added: “There’s no need to be on an island by yourself, trying to suffer in silence. You need people around you to support you. And be hungry and humble and do the work.”
Feeling trapped in your gym? Ayn was, too.

She went from 13-hour days and $16K months…
to working less, earning more, and finally having a life outside the gym.
